Is really hard when your only interests involve wanting more money and things that aren’t related to working.

I wrote an entire cover letter that was just “my CV is gold,” realized I added nothing about why I’d want the job, then spent a week trying to come up with a reason why I would, then spent a few days wondering why I would want anything if it requires me to do things, even in  exchange for money.

Instead of writing why you'd want the job, you should write about why they'd want to hire you and what you'd contribute to their organization. It's their job to make you interested in working for them.

True, although I think I should demonstrate at least some enthusiasm.

Cover letters and resumes serve the sole purpose of getting you an interview. Once you get in front of a person, then it’s on you to win them over.

As such, ask yourself: If you were the hiring manager, what would the ideal candidate look like?

Then write your resume and cover letter to be that person. Make sure you work in buzzwords that you find in the job description as well, so you can pass the computer filters.

Wait you’re European? Or do fancy Americans call it CV now?

And what do the French call it, since I presume “resume” is a French word?

I hate writing cover letters, because I hate feigning enthusiasm.

Also, they’re largely a waste of time.  Better to connect with headhunters to connect you with openings.  Even better, connect with people you actually know who know of openings.

Enthusiasm is ephemeral.  Competence lasts.

The only time I’ve ever seen an American use CV is in academic settings, where a CV will include everything a candidate has done in his/her academic career while a r ésumé won’t.

My boss always places wayyyy too much importance on enthusiasm, passion, etc. when we are hiring. I always wonder how many good applicants we miss just because she’s already filtered out the ones lacking sufficient enthusiasm.
